Toward a New Legal Profession Act

The Legal Profession Act governs and regulates the practise of law in the Yukon. The Law Society of Yukon has embarked on a project to revise and update the Legal Profession Act. We are working toward introduction of the new Bill in the Legislature in the fall of 2012.

There have been many developments in terms of the regulation of professions generally and the legal profession specifically, since the passage of our current Legal Profession Act. In the development of a new Act, it is critical that we are aware of the various perspectives of all relevant stakeholders in terms of the role and function of the Law Society.

A Discussion Paper entitled “Toward a New Legal Profession Act”, has been prepared to assist in obtaining feedback from interested parties. It outlines the reasons for the project, highlights the areas for review and possible reform, and provides information regarding legislation in other jurisdictions.

The Law Society encourages those interested to participate and be part of the process by providing feedback to the Law Society. The Discussion Paper can be accessed on our website at http://www.lawsocietyyukon.com/forms/towardanewlegalprofessionact.pdf. There is an electronic feedback mechanism to allow you to fill in your comments and then submit the comments to the Law Society. Any feedback you may wish to provide must be received by July 15, 2011.
